The Good Word

By Imam Sirajuddin al-Husayni

“Allah said: “Have you not considered how Allah sets forth a parable of a good word [being] like a good tree, whose root is firm and whose branches are in heaven, yielding its fruit in every season by the permission of its Lord? And Allah sets forth parables for men that they may be mindful.

What is meant by the good word here is La Ilaha illa Allah and what is meant by a good tree is the date tree, as has been clarified by the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa sallam), about whom Allah says: “That you may make clear to the people what has been revealed to them.”

Tirmidhi and Nasa’i reported from Anas (radhi allahu anhu) that he said: ‘The Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) came with a stalk of dates and recited “…a parable of a good word [being] like a good tree – until it reaches maturation it yields its fruits in every season by the permission of its Lord.” He (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “It is the date-palm tree.” Then he (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) read: “And the parable of an evil Word is that of an evil tree…” and said: “It is the colocynth.”

From this good word of La Ilaha illa Allah emanates all good words, good actions, and good behaviours. Through it the heart is made good and the lands are made well, as Allah says: “As for the good land, its vegetation comes forth by the permission of its Lord.”

Through it, the words of the believers are made good, as the Exalted says: “Unto Him ascend the goodly words and the righteous actions raise them up.” Through it occur all virtuous, good, and charitable actions of the believers, as Allah said: “They hasten to good things and they are foremost in [attaining] them.” And [the Prophet] (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, ‘O Allah, I ask You [to enable me to do] charitable [good] deeds, and to leave off evil deeds.’ And in a narration: ‘I ask You [to enable me to do] good deeds.’

Through these good words, the life of the believer is made good, for the Exalted says: “Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has faith, verily, to him will We give a life that is good.”

Through it, the spirit of the believer becomes pleasant, and Allah has informed us of the greetings given by the Angels to the believers when they reach Paradise and its doors are opened for them. The Exalted says: “And those who fear their Lord will be led to the Garden in crowds; until behold, they arrive there and then its gates will be opened and its keepers will say: ‘Peace be upon you! Well have you done! Enter all here, to dwell therein.'” They have become good spiritually in their hearts, in their souls, in their minds, in their hearing, and in their sights, for they are good men, and their women are good women. “For they have been guided [in this life] to the purest of speeches; they have been guided to the Path of him Who is worthy of [all] praise.” They will be adorned in a goodly Paradise, and they will descend upon good dwellings. Allah said: “And beautiful mansions in gardens of everlasting bliss.”

They will be in nearness to the Lord of the Worlds, Who is Pure and Who accepts only that which is pure, and Who does not accept in His proximity and His Paradise save the pure. The Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘Allah, the Exalted, is Pure and does not accept anything save that which is pure.”

The best of the pure and the purest of the pure, and by whom the pure ones are made pure, is the well-spring of purity, our Master, our Beloved, and our Intercessor with our Lord, Muhammad (sallahu alayhi wa sallam), the leader of purity, the father of purity, the inhabitant of the pure and good dwelling. There is none who is better or purer than him, and no one is better or nobler [in the sight] of Allah than him, as [the Prophet] (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) said ‘And I am the noblest from among the first and the last [in the sight of] my Lord – and that is no boast.”

O Allah, gift us with his purity, shower us with his blessings, and enter us under his (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) banner, as befits his lofty status – Amin!

May Allah have mercy upon the one who said:

Ascend towards Tayba there between its domes

A Beloved for the maladies of the hearts and a doctor

For where will you seek wellness

If you do not seek medicine in Tayba in the presence of the purified one

By whom the world has become good

From where, then shall you seek wellness?
